Cross Cut exhibition featured in Two Coats of Paint’s “NYC Selected Gallery Guide: March 2024.”

DURAN | MASHAAL is pleased to announce the unveiling of "Lacuna," marking Debbi Kenote's inaugural solo presentation and her second exhibition with the gallery. "Lacuna" introduces an exquisite collection of new shaped works by the esteemed artist, offering a captivating exploration into Kenote's creative journey.

Drawing inspiration from cherished childhood memories and a profound fascination with American Craft Traditions, Kenote unveils a series of shaped canvases that challenge conventional artistic boundaries. Through her meticulous process of crafting her own stretchers-a task akin to assembling a complex puzzle-Kenote redefines the traditional rectangular painting canvas. Delving into extensive research on quilts, weaving, and architecture, Kenote meticulously designs and constructs canvas shapes that serve as the foundation for her expressive artworks.

Cristin Tierney Gallery is pleased to present Cross Cut, an exhibition of new work by Debbi Kenote and Mark SengbuschCross Cut, which features both artists' individual explorations of the language of sculpture through painting, opens Friday, March 8th with a reception from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and continues through April 20th. This marks Kenote’s first and Sengbusch’s second exhibition with the gallery. Both artists will be present at the reception.

Cross Cut is a nice metaphor for both of our interests in woodworking and our interaction with the 3D plane while painting. We intersect shapes horizontally, quite often through the act of tiling or joining, something quite unusual for painters. Cross Cut is also used in the sense of taking a journey or cutting through history. While working as contemporary painters in New York City, we both find similar landmarks in history to claim as influences (architecture, craft, as well as over a decade shared in NYC).” - Debbi Kenote & Mark Sengbusch

Marvin Gardens is pleased to present Reverse Reverb, a two-person exhibition of shaped works on canvas featuring Debbi Kenote and Zuriel Waters. The Brooklyn based painters have honed in on two very distinct ways to literally stretch the boundaries of paintings. Both display a command of carefully chosen color, building compositions that play with space laterally: Kenote’s stretched canvas structures reference the center of the work with angular movements radiating outward and pointing inward, depending on the reading of the viewer. While Waters’ tactile, flat objects display bulbous and curving forms protruding laterally from a central cross or square. Both seem to embody a history of textile and dye, although Waters’ surfaces are all custom paint mixtures lending to that effect, and the method of pinning to the wall also suggests how a carpet is displayed. Kenote applies archival pigments to achieve atmospheric dyed backgrounds onto which biomorphic shapes are then painted. These forms enhance and at times contradict the rigid custom supports over which the painting is stretched. Seen in the same space the conversation between the two artists is palpable, almost like sound waves radiating from the centers of their compositions, complementing each other in their differences. A conversation that ultimately feels as if it fits together like pieces of a puzzle.
